USCIS Automatic Extension of Green Card for Naturalization Applicants

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) revised its policy manual to automatically extend the validity of a Permanent Resident Card (PRC) or Form I-551 through an Application for Naturalization (Form N-400) receipt notice. The updated rules may no longer require applicants to file a separate Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card (Form I-90).

A Much-Awaited Update

USCIS decided to implement the policy revision in response to immigrants’ repeated requests for the automatic extension of PRCs. The automatic extension triggers 24 months from the date of expiry listed on the PRC.

Important Development for Immigrants

This policy reduces the frequency of ADIT (Alien Documentation, Identification and Telecommunication systems) stamp appointments, the number of Form I-90s to be filed, and the number of inquiries for immigration benefit adjudications.

Note: The policy takes effect starting December 12, 2022.
