Update: DHS Rescinded the Termination of El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua’s TPS

The Temporary Protection Status (TPS) can be available to immigrants coming from countries experiencing disasters or wars. Returning to their home countries would be deemed dangerous or threatening to their safety and well-being. Beneficiaries of the TPS program may gain protection from removal, employment authorization, and travel authorization.

Rescinding TPS Termination for El Salvador and others

El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua lost their TPS status in 2017 and 2018. However, on June 13, 2023, DHS rescinded the previous termination and brought back their TPS status. In addition, DHS also extended their respective TPS programs by 18 months. According to estimates, the reinstitution of TPS in these countries benefits at least 334,000 immigrants.

TPS Benefits

The reinstatement and extension of the TPS status greatly benefits El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua nationals. Eligible beneficiaries may experience the following benefits:

  • Lawful entry and stay within US

  • Ability to obtain employment authorization document (EAD)
