Faster Visa Issuance

F and M student Visa Update

The Department of State (DOS) recently issued an updated guidance on the issuance of F or M student visas.

Consular officers can now issue F or M student visas up to 365 days in advance of an international student’s program start date. This is to streamline the visa process for students planning to study in the United States. However, it is important to note that this guidance does not affect other requirements, such as obtaining the Form I-20 and paying the I-901 SEVIS Fee.

To maintain the integrity of the visa process, students are permitted to enter the United States only 30 days before the program start date stated on their Form I-20. Any attempts to enter the country earlier than this may result in inadmissibility to be determined by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Furthermore, students and school officials are advised to verify the following before arriving at a U.S. port of entry:

  1. Confirm that the Form I-20 being used for travel includes an active I-901 SEVIS Fee payment.
  2. Ensure that the school’s name on the Form I-20 matches the name on the visa.
  3. Keep student financial information up to date in SEVIS.

Increase in Fees

Starting May 30, 2023, the fee for student and exchange visitor visas (F, M, and J) will increase from $160 to $185. For more information, refer to the DOS press release or see FAQ.
