USCIS Issues Guidance on Mobile Biometrics Collection and Remote Benefit Requestor Biometrics

The policy on mobile biometrics services aims to assist benefit applicants who cannot physically attend appointments at Application Support Centers (ASCs), mainly due to health or disability issues. For immigrants, it is crucial to know when mobile biometrics services may be available to speed up immigration procedures like visa renewals and address changes. In addition, this service could offer convenience for asylum seekers.

Policy Guideline

On March 7, 2023, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released a new guideline for mobile biometric services. The main points are as follows:

  1. Mobile biometric services on locations outside of Application Support Centers (ASCs) may only be available at USCIS’ sole discretion. If the USCIS cannot accommodate a remote location, it may coordinate with local law enforcement agencies (LEAs) or other Department of Homeland Security (DHS) components.
  2. USCIS does not collect biometric data from persons in custody at correctional institutions. According to the intradepartmental agreement, the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) will conduct background and security checks on incarcerated individuals.

Important Reminders

Applicants attending mobile biometric services should:

  • Provide their biometrics
  • Bring a valid physical photo ID, like driving license or passport
  • Fill out Form I-797C

The USCIS may decline the application of candidates who does not comply with the requirements or attend their appointed schedules.
