Alert: New Green Card and EAD Designs

On January 30, 2023, the USCIS announced the issuance of new designs for permanent resident cards or “green cards” and Employment Authorization Documents (EADs). This initiative is in line with the agency’s anti-fraud and counterfeiting measure of redesigning its cards every three to five years. Such an initiative falls under the Secure Identification Platform (SIP) Project.

Upgraded Security Features

The new designs of green cards and EADs intend to protect national security and provide better services to USCIS clients. Here are some of the most notable changes and features in the new green card and EAD issuances:

  • more intricate artwork
  • tactile printing
  • optimized optically variable ink
  • holographic images
  • layer-reveal aspect accompanied by a partial window located at the back photo box
  • data fields in multiple places

Currently Issued Cards Remain Valid

Although the USCIS is releasing new sets of cards, the previously issued ones remain valid. Cards with the older design are usable until their expiration dates. Further, the USCIS may still issue green cards and EADs with the older design because the agency is trying to deplete its current card stock.
