Under the Family Reunification Parole (FRP) program, US citizens and lawful permanent residents may petition their eligible Colombian, El Salvadoran, Guatemalan, and Honduran relatives to be on parole in the United States for three years. To qualify for FRP, the beneficiaries should have already applied for family-based immigration. However, for the time being, they are still waiting for visa availability.
FRP Process Update
On July 7, 2023, DHS released a notice implementing new FRP processes for Colombian, El Salvadoran, Guatemalan, and Honduran beneficiaries. It begins with the Department of State issuing an invitation to the sponsor (US citizen or LPR) who had an approved petition “Petition for Alien Relative.” After, the invited sponsor may initiate the FRP process by filing a request for advance travel authorization and parole.

Purpose of the New Processes
The procedural update aims to reunite immigrant families through legal means congruent with US immigration policies. As the new FRP responds to urgent humanitarian cases, it enables beneficiaries to enter and stay in America while waiting for their family-based immigration visas. After the visa approval, the beneficiaries may qualify for permanent residency.
Notable Conditions
Besides complying with the procedures designated by DHS and the Immigration and Nationality Act, interested immigrants should take note of the following conditions:
- At the time of application, the beneficiaries should be residing outside of US
- They should comply with all medical and evaluation requirements
- They did not obtain an immigrant visa before qualifying under the FRP program
